Colors of Fall
Fall and winter’s wardrobe calls for luxe fabrics and rich hues.

Cozy, comfortable, elegant and glamorous: the colors of fall and winter always denote luxury and warmth. We know that fashion changes constantly, and the styles may change depending on where you are this holiday season, but the winter season's colors are universal.

So, how to update the hues of your wardrobe for the season's special events and wintry weather? Costance Hoffman, President of Social and Business Graces (www.learnsocialgraces.com), advises that we don rich fabrics and textures, with their winter-appropriate feel.

Think velvet, corduroy, chenille and silk in dramatic colors like garnet and deep green. Especially hot this season are berry and jewel tones, with designers and department stores stocking up on shades of ruby, blueberry, emerald, cherry and cranberry.

"You can never go wrong with a dark toned suit," says Hoffman, especially for those workplace holiday parties. This season's crop of classic suits offer lots of variations on basic black, especially in the purple range: suits for both men and women are cropping up in shades of blackberry, lavender, boysenberry and indigo.

It's also a season for festive twists on old favorites.

"Wear a red dress to an event instead of the traditional black dress," says Magoe Johnson, a certified image consultant. "This is a time you can be a little bolder."

Try a sparkly accessory like gold-tone strappy heels or a glitter rhinestone brooch. The celebratory spirit of the season lets you get away with deep, dramatic color like a navy blue cocktail dress or a kelly-green sheath. For men, think of those purples in the suit department: "Add an interesting tie but keep it classy," advises Hoffman.

What shapes should our fall colors come in? Macy's trendspotters and image consultants have found that this season's signature look is a classic one--think Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn--with timeless silhouettes and modern twists on wardrobe staples.

Along with classic suits and ladylike dresses, choose beautiful, luxurious accessories in rich materials like leather, patent leather and thick knits.

Traditional hounds tooth, herringbone and tweed are also big this fall, say our Macy's experts. Add dramatic flair to your wardrobe with a lavish hounds tooth coat or a tweed pencil skirt. They're festive and cozy, making us think of wintry English days and bundling up for the holiday weather.

Whatever colors you choose this season, think warm, think luxurious, think bold and dramatic--and you can't go wrong. St. Nick himself agrees, in his holly-red suit: the colors for the holidays are bold and timeless.
