The Indiana sand dunes are known for bringing joy to the families who visit the tourist attraction ever year, but tragedy stroked when Nathan Woessneer fell into a sink hole at the Mount Baldy dune leaving the six-year-old boy trapped for hours under 11 feet of sand.
Woessneer was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago after being rescued, and has remained in critical condition. The local medical staff announced that he might be able to get off a ventilator by the end of the week.
His treatment requires cleansing his lungs of the sand inhaled, which will allow him to recover with minimum damage to his air passages. An air vent inside the dune permitted Woessneer to breathe while the rescue took place. His survival and recovery are considered ‘miracles’ due to the gravity of the accident.
